Amsterdam Bird Photography Tour, Saturday 15th April 2017
guide: Menno van Duijn

As the weather forecasts weren't that what one would have hoped fore, postponed our start time an hour after sunrise. Despite that I was already awake long before my wake up call so instead of browsing the internet I drove to our meeting point just north of Amsterdam and did some location checks before I woud meet the client.

I walked around in the area hoping for the relocate the Capian Tern that had been seen some afternoons in the previous days as it came to roost. Sadly not Caspian Tern but I did hear my first Savi's Warbler for this year rattling in the distance. A quick check at the pool showed there wasn't anything interesting to come back for with the client. The Avocets and Black-tailed Godwits where to far for a decent pictures. On my way back to the car a Snipe flew overhead and did soms display flights, quite unique to see a displaying Snipe in this area but a promising sight that the population might be recovering (at least I hope for) another threat was a male Garganey that flew our of stream as a cyclist passed. I deliberate chose this meeting point because here you can observe good numbers of meadow birds and I witnessed two male Black-tailed Godwits fighting over a female. All in all a good start and even better then starring at your mobile screen.

I had just poured in my cup of coffee at the time the client arrived, so a quick sip of caffeine and we drove off. The client had booked a half day photography tour and because he just moved to Amsterdam I thought it would be nice to show him the area that's just outside Amsterdam so he could re-visit in the future. Just north of Amsterdam there's one of the best areas to photograph meadow birds in early spring. Black-tailed Godwits (our national bird), Redshanks, Lapwings and Oystercatchers can easily be photographed from the car. With luck you also find Yellow and White Wagtails looking for insects along the streams and where there's reed to find you always hear Sedge Warblers, Reed Buntings and even Bluethroat.

Although it's was already half way April we stil found some thousands of Barnacle Geese and a few Greater White-fronted Geese as wel. The week before we also visited the area on a guided tour and saw a pair of Slavonian Grebes which where still around. These magnificent birds where worth to get out into the rain for a couple of minutes before we where fully soaked. Almost on every stretch of water we saw their greater cousin, the Great-crested Grebe, one pair stole the show with their courtship dance.
