Guided birding in the Oostvaardersplassen
Satuturday 4th of November 2017
Guide: Rein Genuit

Saturday morning, some drizzling rain but almost no wind, not the best conditions for raptors. We are waiting for a Pallid Harrier by a field in Flevoland. When sun comes through a Hen Harrier is showing of very well as well as a couple of Roe Deers. The Pallid Harrier is there for only a short moment, while it’s almost directly on a prey.

A good start of the day, two lifers for John are ticked off already. Not a lifer but a good species was a briefly flying by Merlin.

Our next stop was on the “Grote Praambult” to make a attempt to see White-tailed Eagle but there is to much mist for a clear view over the fields. We can see thousands of Barnacle Geese and among several hundreds of Grey-legged Geese. There are also some Great Egrets and Red Deers foraging in the marshlands.

When we arrive at the visitors centre from “De Oostvaardersplassen” the sun breaks through, We enjoyed to see several groups of Fieldfares and Chaffinches on migration and John was very happy with good views of a couple of Redwings on the ground, which he saw only once but rather poorly in Belgium. We had a nice walk to a hide and on the way over there we have seen Marsh Tits, a Eurasian Jay, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Northern Goshawk, Gadwall and Tufted Duck. From the hide we had nice views on Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Shelduck and a Red Fox.

After a nice warm cup of coffee, we drove to the “Jan van de Boschpad”, on that spot we saw several Marsh Harriers but the best sighting over there was an adult White-tailed Eagle we found the bird when it was sitting rather dull in a tree some miles away, but after a quarter of an hour it decided to give away a flight show straight in our direction. This was really nice to sight and the third lifer this day.

Then I got news about a European Serin not far from us from our back-office, we decided to give it a try. When we arrived a the location we walked around a bit in the hope we can find it. Then I hear the bird calling but we were not able to located it. But John was lucky enough to find it and a few seconds later it flew off over our heads to the west, another lifer!

All John’s targets species for this day we have more or less seen but for one off that species we have to leave Flevoland and drive towards the coast. Grey Partridge a species which is not easy to find when your are looking for them, but luckily the coastal area between Haarlem and Leiden is a stronghold for the species.

When we arrive it’s raining and i have just a little hope to find some Grey Partridge in that kind of weather. But then i find a group of nine birds in a field nearby the road, and we are able to observe them very well. It’s still raining and light conditions are not that greatest anymore, the end off a good day birding. In Total we had about 60 bird species and 4 mammals (Roe and Red Deer, Red Fox and European Hare).
