20180602 Full Day Oostvaardersplassen

It’s a grey start of the day, overcast and a drizzle but the spirits are high. Matt and I (Menno) are heading to the Oostvaardersplassen for a full day guided birding. Matt had send me his targets with mainly songbirds so we start early in the morning for the dawn chorus.

When we leave the highway we pull over and open our windows are an interesting site with some high trees and scrub. We are overwhelmed with singing birds: Willow Warblers, Chaffinches, Song Thrushes, Wren and a Grasshopper Warbler. A nice start at the next stop I’ve planned for Nightingale and directly we hear 3 males singing and adding Common Whitethroat, Reed, Marsh and Icterine Warbler to the list.

We stop at a Sand Martin colony (c. 300 nesting holes) and from the reed we hear a Bluethroat but he keeps out of sight while a Sedge Warbler climbs up and throws out some display flights. Same happens at another reedbed were we only hear a Bluethroat plus a Savi’s and Grasshopper Warbler next to each other. Luckily a pair of Bearded Tits is very cooperative and are preening themselves in top of the reed.

From here we drive into a forest with our windows open and drive from one to the other singing Blackcap and Garden Warbler. Suddenly we hear a bird singing which we can’t identify. It’s in the middle of the forest with no internet connection to check birdsongs. So we record the song and take some shots to check it on the internet and with others. While driving we add Tree Pipit and Hawfinch to the list.

At a teahouse we hope to find a Pied Flycatcher and Wood Warbler but the birds probably have left but we do see Green-, Gold-, and Bullfinch, Short-toed Treecreeper and Long-tailed Tit. The first site for a Great Reed Warbler only produces Reed Warblers but a Red-crested Pochard is a bonus. Luckily at the site we hear the bird singing before we arrive at the shore and see it singing from the top of the reed. The Greater Flamingos accompanied by the Chilean Flamingos aren’t difficult to locate and before we arrive at the car see a pair of Nuthatches feeding their fledglings.

We check the latest sightings and see that there’s a Red-necked Phalarope on the lake we planned as our next stop. After a 15 minute walk, attacked by mosquitos, we arrive at the hide. Just before we enter it we hear a Spotted Crake calling. We scan the water and before we see the Phalarope we’ve seen Black-tailed Godwits, Northern Shovelers, Pintails,Teal, 3 Gargeney males and Eurasian Spoonbills and in the back a Cetti’s Warbler starts singing and a Water Rail squeaks out his call.

Back at the car we have a coffee meanwhile a Marsh and Icterine Warbler provide a nice background song. We cross the province to the Oostvaardersplassen because the clouds are breaking open and the temperature starts to rise along the way we see Common Buzzards and Kestrels using the first thermals so we hope the White-tailed Eagles are doing the same. As hard as we try we can’t locate the birds.

From one of the hides we see the Hobbies are catching dragonflies while a Kingfishers flies by. Here, in the middle of the day against all expectations a male Bluethroat is singing out in the open showings his beautiful blue chest with the white spot as it sings. We head to our last stop for the day. From this lookout we continue to scan for the White-tailed Eagles but with no result for this bird but get a unexpected Black-winged Stilt. Eurasian Curlew and Skylark are both new for Matt and before we get back to the car get a nice view on a female Cuckoo being attacked by songbirds.

We end up with exactly 100 species of birds for the day and this does not include the Bar-headed and Egyptian Goose, Ring-necked Parakeet and Chilean Flamingo.
