20180809 - Oostvaardersplassen Bird Photography

Oostvaardersplassen Bird Photography Tour full day
Guide: Cor Visser
Date: 9th of August 2018

It’s 05:15 am when I pick up Syed who was already waiting in front of his hotel in Amsterdam. On the way we saw a couple of White Storks sitting on lampposts and a female Red Deer.

We head to the Oostvaardersplassen where we arrived at 06:00. At the car park we first take a cup of coffee with Ontbijtkoek and Stroopwafel (typically Dutch) and went to the first hide named “the Kluut” on our way to the hide we see and hear Fitis, Barn Swallow, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Chaffinches, Blackbirds, Cetti’s Warbler and Chiffchaffs. In front of the hide we see Spoonbills, Great Egrets, Reed Warbler, Fitis, Bluethroat, Barn Swallow and in a distance a White-tailed Eagle. We spend some time to take a lot of photo’s. Our next stop was an other hide named “the Grauwe Gans” here we see about 35 Ruff, Common Sandpiper, Avocet, Moorhen, Greylag Geese, Barnacle Geese, Northern Lapwing, Black-winged Stilt, etc.

We went back to the main entrance for a walk through the area. During our walk we saw European Goldfinch, Linnet, White Wagtail and also a young Cuckoo who is flying a few meters ahead of us and gives us the opportunity to take pictures. We also saw a Red Fox, Red Deer and Konik Horse and spend some time to photograph them. After this walk we visited the visitor center for lunch. Because of the pleasant weather it was good outside. Unfortunately, the weather changed slowly and we saw dark clouds.

We decided to continue quickly towards the Praambult to stop on the way and to walk to the hide "De Oeverloper". Once arrived at the hut we are not the only visitors. A pair of Great Crested Grebe sat on the nest in front of the hide and a Little Grebe swam in summer plumage. A Kingfisher also showed up and an Osprey appeared sitting in a tree in the distance. We waited a while for the Osprey to come closer but it was chased by a Buzzard. Meanwhile it was raining and we decided to go back to the car.

We drove back to the other side of the water to see if the Bearded Tit showed up. Arriving at the destination, the rain became worse. In mutual consultation decided to go to the hide where we got soaked. In front of the hide we saw Avocet, Spoonbill, Barn Swallow, Great White Egret, Spotted Redshank, Sedge Warbler, Ruff etc. It was still raining when head back to Amsterdam. When we arrived at the hotel we say goodbye.

Total score: 68 species of birds.
