Four day guided bird photography tour
Guide: Joost Bouwmeester
Date: 11-14 September 2018

As we had a half day to spend we headed to the pier of IJmuiden but when we arrived the pier had been closed because there was a strong wind.

Birds hide when the wind is fierce so Rachel and I went for the fallow deer in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. All the fallow deer are foraging at the moment under oak trees for the acorns. We saw hundreds of them. Some of the males were already testing there strength in moderate fights. Rachel got nice opportunities to photograph them for they are pretty tame. She also had a nice chance on a long-tailed tit. The hobby we spotted flew a bit too fast in his hunt for dragonflies to get the one action shot.

Next day we checked out the Lepelaarplassen and the Oostvaarderplassen. Rain was expected so the hides where the best options. Rachel could make some good shots of avocet, cormorant and kingfisher. A red-necked phalarope was too far away for a nice picture. By the time the light got really bad Rachel took the opportunity to experiment some shots of shovelers at a very low speed. I was surprised by the artistic results.

Our third day was to the very comfortable photography hides. Rachel had never observed birds in Europe so every bird is a surprise. She enjoyed all the tits and woodpeckers and even the vole who’s usually present. All the birds were very close by so we hope to see nice pics from Rachel.

Our fourth day trip was to Texel. Always a good birding spot and a nice experience. However the maintenance of the Wadden dike scared of a lot of birds in the ponds along the dike. Some parts were even inaccessible. Still we had great fun with ruddy turnstones and goldfinches.

After having a good time on the island, we left Texel a bit earlier to check out the barnacle geese at the Pettemerpolder. We were lucky ! A flock of barnacles was within distance. We carefully drove the car nearby. The 600mm outside the window and every time the geese started to fourage again, we approached a little bit. Wrong light so just a little bit further to the left with the car for this last chance had to be successful for Rachel. Suddenly the sound of a helicopter ! Very loud. The thing flew straight over our car and the flock. They panicked and exploded into the air. How can a lucky Rachel be so unfortunate. ‘We’ll be back’, she promised, ‘for birding in the Netherlands is nice ’.
