Noord-Holland Full Day Guided Birding Tour
Guide: Menno van Duijn
Date: 10 November 2018

One of the most prettiest hotels in the Netherlands is Hotel des Indes in The Hague. This is were Barton and Kristina are staying in the old center of the city. Although it’s still dark when I pick them up at 07.30 a Robin it already singing and I also hear the migrating Redwings and Song Thrushes.

We head to the north part of the Noord Holland province (also called the crown of Noord Holland) and start at Julianadorp. We arrive at 09.00 while it’s getting light. As soon as we step out we hear a Firecrest calling and with some effort we see the little gem bouncing around in the foliage together with Blue and Great Tits.

In the village park we walk to a with berries loaded Hawthorn. Redwings, Blackbirds and a Robin are feasting on it but we are here for a Siberian speciality deep in the bush two Bohemian Waxwings are totally relaxed digesting their berries which they swallow completely. After ten minutes they become active and gorge themselves with more at eye-level within 10 feet in front of us.

We head to Den Helder to see the Wadden Sea waders resting for the high tide. Over 100 Black-tailed Godwits are resting right in front of the hide. Common Redshanks are all over the place and we find some Spotted Redshanks within the flock. On the mud Dunlins are foraging. Beside the hundreds of Pintails we also find Teal, Common Shelduck and some Little Grebes. At the Wadden Sea we see many Eurasian Curlews, Oystercatchers, Dunlins and some Red Knot and Grey Plovers. 4 Little Egrets are waiting for the low tide and a handful of Eider are diving for mussels.

At our next stop we see 12 Long-eared Owls roosting in the middle of the village. We find the flock of Dark-bellied Brent and find a White-bellied - and Black Brent.

A walk at Den Oever results in sightings of Rock Pipits, Black Redstart, a late Common Sandpiper, White Wagtail and more waders. A Greater Scaup and Common Seal is present in the harbour were we have a very nice lunch.

The sighting of a Black-winged Kite nearby kicks us back into action and a half hour later we’re looking at the bird hovering in the air while scanning the fields for mice. We drive around to find the flock of Bean Geese were a Red-breasted Goose had been seen the previous day. We find part of the flock but their vary mobile and far out so we decide to head towards Amsterdam as heavy rain sweeps over.

One hour later we’re scanning the Markermeer from the dike where thousands of Tufted Ducks and Coots are on the water. A group of Goldeneyes take off and with them a Smew one of Barton’s targets. Three more females fly by but no sight of the smart looking males.

As we pull the car over to have a look at the Barnacle and Greater White-fronted Geese a Rough-legged Buzzard takes off from the trees next to the car and starts hovering above the dike. It dives down but is then flushed by cyclists and passes us at eye-level. A very nice sighting to end the day with.
