Guided birding day at the Zeeland Province
Guide: Marcel Klootwijk
Date: Friday 22 February 2019

We started our tour at 09:00 at the hotel in Schuddebeurs, Schouwen. Because of the dense fog we decided to go to the nearby forest first. Despite of the grey weather we hear a lot of birds such as Song thrush, Great Tit and Robins. We had some nice views of Green-, Greater Spotted Woodpecker and some Goldcrests. In the middle of the forest we noticed the Grey Herons were already at their nest site. Furthermore we came along the typical species as Jay, Long-tailed Tits, Wrens and Dunnock.

After this one hour walk the sky cleared a bit and we went looking for swans and geese. Just near the town of Nieuwerkerk we saw a nice mixed group of Mute Swans and some Bewick’s Swans. At the same field we noticed a few Hares, which were very special to our English guest, because they don’t see them a lot over there.

We moved on to an area called Dijkwater, near Sirjansland, where we found our first geese. A big group of Greater White-fronted Geese where resting there, with a few Barnacles. Also we had great views of a mixed group of Whooper and Bewick’s Swans. One of the highlights for our guests where the Black-necked Grebes over there. Further interesting species where Goshawk, Water Rail, Common Pochard and Cetti’s Warbler. Curlew and Oystercatcher were the first waders. An early female Marsh Harrier was sitting in top of a bush and gave us excellent views.

Next stop was the famous birding area Prunjepolder. The fog was a bit more dense near the coast then earlier but we did manage to see a lot of species. The first Little Egret, Great Egret and Spoonbills were seen as well as Brent Geese, Avocets and Pintails. The highlight of today was a small group of Smews foraging at a nice distance. Later on the fog disappeared and we had some great sightings of Red-breasted Merganser and Spotted Redshank.

After buying a small lunch at the nearby gas station we went back to the Prunjepolder to watch for waders. We found a few new species for the day such as Ruff, Common Ringed Plover, Common Snipe and Turnstone. Large groups of Brent and Barnacle Geese were foraging in the area and we were lucky with the incoming tide. That causes massive movements of Dunlins, Knots, Bar-tailed Godwits and Grey plovers. The all flew right over our heads, which created good views. Some other nice species were Goldeneye, Black-necked Grebe and a large group of 18 Slavonian grebes on a flat Oosterschelde.

We decided to make a last stop at the Koudekerkse inlaag where we saw Rock pipit, Spoonbill, Great Egret and a Razorbill.

At the end of the day we managed to see a total of 88 species of birds just 10 km from the hotel.
