Birding Nieuwkoopse and Oostvaardersplassen
Guide: Menno van Duijn
Date: Sunday 5 May 2019

A cold front batters the Netherlands for the past days with an arctic wind stream. Wind from the north west bring in showers including hail but last no longer than 15 minutes. After these moments you get sunshine lighting up the dramatic skies. So for birding it’s a matter of planning between the rain or enduring them.

One can face the elements and still enjoy the spring birding the other thing is that most migrants don’t like the headwinds on their journey north. Despite all this we had a fantastic day with 102 species of birds!

Kees from the USA has his roots in the Netherlands so we can speak Dutch most of the time. The planning for the day is the Nieuwkoopse Plassen in the morning and the Oostvaardersplassen in the afternoon.

On the way to the first stop we already find many nice birds on the way: Black-tailed Godwits, Eurasian Spoonbills, many Great Crested Grebes and the fist of may Marsh Harriers of the day.

Before we head out for the walk we check the radar and luckily the heaviest part of the showers skim us so we only have to face some or short rainfalls. Although there’s a strong wind we manage to see Bluethroat, Savi’s, Grasshopper Sedge and Reed Warbler in the reedbeds.

There had been some wader migration as we find 4 Turnstones (rare inland), 3 Temminck’s and 2 Little Stint, Dunlin and many Common Ringed Plovers and local Little Ringed Plovers. A nice flock of summer plumage Ruff with different coloured males is a threat to see.

Overhead we constantly see and hear displaying Marsh Harriers. A Bittern booms from the reed while a pair of Mediterranean Gulls fly overhead. Common Swifts, Barn Swallows, House and Sand Martins forage on the low flying insects above the water when we hear Black Terns arriving flying right overhead.

Back at the car we warm ourselves up with hot coffee and stroopwafels. A very cooperative male Eurasian Kestrel disturbs our moment of rest and let us take perfect flight shots.

Kees missed the Purple Heron that flew by so we try our luck in the meadows where they forage. We find large flocks of Whimbrell and Eurasian Curlews in the fields and add Blackcap, Garden Warbler and Common Whitethroat to the list. We find a foraging Purple Heron in the mowed meadow looking for killed mice, frogs or young birds joined by Grey Heron and White Storks. We also find a active and cooperative Hobby flying around.

After this successful morning we head to the Oostvaardersplassen, we first stop for lunch at the visitors center. Here we’re welcomed by Cetti’s, Willow and Garden Warblers. From here we take a short walk to see Common Redstart, Short-toed Treecreeper and hear a Willow Tit.

From here we drive along the IJsselmeerdijk. Here we find a female Red-breasted Merganser looking for shelter for the strong wind and waves, so do about 100 Great Crested Grebes.

We check out the Eurasian Wryneck that shows fantastically on the cycling path looking for ants flickering out his long sticky tongue between the concrete. In the tulip fields (that are now cut off) we find Yellow Wagtails.

We head back towards the Oostvaardersplassen were we add Stonechat and Northern Wheatear as the last species of birds for today’s list before we drive back to Leiden.
