Tuesday morning, August 20, I pickup Fergus Sweeny in the center of Amsterdam for a full day birding in the Oostvaardersplassen. For Fergus it was the first time for a bird excursion with a guide.

We arrived at 07:00 am at our first stop on the Oostvaardersdijk. Present where Common Gull, Herring Gull, Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull and a few Great Crested Grebe. A little bit further we saw a group of White Wagtails with Yellow Wagtails mostly juveniles.

On our next stop at the Kwelplas we heard a number of Bearded Reedling but they stay low in the reed. In the distance we saw an adult White-tailed Eagle and a juvenile in a dead tree. We had a good view through the telescope. Above the reed there where a couple of Marsh Herrier hovering.

Back to the car and have a cup of coffee with a stroopwafel.

Further on to the Lepelaarplassen and on our way to the hide we saw among other Dunnock, Robin, Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler. From the hide we saw the necessary duck species, Great Egret and Little Grebe.

Our next stop was the hide Grauwe Gans. In front of the hide we saw various waders, Avocet, Ruff, Spotted Redshank, Common Greenshank, Black-tailed Godwit and also a Bluethroat and many Reed Warblers.A Peregrine Falcon was sitting in a dead tree on the other side of the lake. Moments later there was panic among the birds on the lake and an adult White-tailed Eagle flew over.We slowly drove on the dike to the visitor center and spotted a group of 80 Ruddy Shelducks.

After walking for an hour through the area where we also saw Red Deer and Konik horses, it was time for lunch. We used this in the visitor center. After lunch we visited some other hides but due to the heat it was a bit quieter with birds. We decided to drive to the Groene Jonker, partly because Fergus also wanted to get to know some other areas. After an hour drive we arrived in the Groene Jonker. Here we saw several ducks and geese in the moult. A pair of Little Ringed Plover was also present here. After we got back to the car we decided to take a look at Wavershoek because this area was on our way back to Amsterdam. In the meantime it was around five when we got there. Here too it was fairly quiet with birds. After a short walk through the area it was time to drive back to Amsterdam. At half past five we arrived in the center and I said goodbye to an enthusiastic Fergus.
