20190902 Daniel Field

Full day birding at the Oostvaardersplassen
Guide: Cor Visser
Date: 2th of September 2019

Monday 2 September I picked up Daniel in Utrecht at 6:30 am. We drove directly to Hilversum to find one of his targets: the Black Woodpecker. Arriving at the parking lot we immediately heard the call of the Black Woodpecker. We went to investigate but could not find him. We walked around the area for more than two hours and searched but unfortunately it stayed with his call. Along the way we saw Treecreeper, Nuthatch, a number of Great Spotted Woodpecker, Crested Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit and a Green Woodpecker.

After a cup of coffee with stroopwafel we drove towards the Oostvaardersplassen. The weather was good with a light wind.

When we arrived at the Oostvaardersdijk we saw Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Grebe and some species of ducks. Then on to the hide Grauwe Gans where various waders were present with many Common Teal, Northern Shoveler, Ruffs, Common Sandpiper etc. On the other side of the lake we saw Marsh Harrier, Peregrine Falcon and White-tailed Eagle. On the way to and from the hide we saw, among other things. Blackcap, Wren and various Tits.

Further on to the visitor center we saw a Buzzard. Arrived in the hide at the visitor center again the necessary waders and suddenly a group of Ruddy Shelduck approached and landed just in front of the hut. This was also a target for Daniel because he read in an other blog about them and hoped they were still present.

We would go for a lunch in the visitor centre but when we arrived it was closed. We decided to drive to Lelystad and had a quick lunch at the Mac. After the lunch we went back to have a look in the area and other hides to see if the Kingfisher showed up but no luck. We saw a lot of moulting ducks and a Greenshank. We drove back over the dike and stopped by the Julianapad. On the way to the hide we saw Reed Warblers, Barn Swallows and one Bearded Reedling present.

On the parking lot I had a look at my mobile phone and there was a juvenile Dotterel seen in Eemnes. After consulting with Daniel we decided to go there. 35 minutes later we arrived on the place. There was nobody present on the spot and we search for a long time but the Dotterel was not found. We saw a couple of Golden Plover, Kestrel, Marsh Harrier, Lapwing and a Buzzard. After a long day with more than 80 species we went to to the airport to drop off Daniel.
