Noord-Holland Full Day Guided Birding Tour
Guide: Cor Visser
Date: 14 September 2019

At 06:30 am I meet Barbara and her husband Randy at their hotel in the center of Amsterdam. The request of Barbara and Randy was to birding in the province of Noord-Holland and in particular the coast. As the first destination we decided to drive to IJmuiden where we arrived at 7:15 am in the parking lot and then walked onto the pier. It was windless and the sea was very calm. In terms of birds it was pretty quiet except for the necessary Gulls and Ruddy turnstones. Furthermore, a single Purple sandpiper and some Northern wheatears. Once again at the beach, only Gulls and a single Oystercatcher were present.

When we arrived at the car we decided to drive towards De Putten. Unfortunately the road was closed. We arrived at our destination via the country roads. Here the necessary Duck species, Spoonbill, Great Tern, Sandpiper, Green sandpiper were present. After a cup of coffee with the stroopwafel we went further north with the some stops along the way to search the bulb fields.

Further on to the Wadden we stopped at Balgzand and saw a lot of shorebirds Dunlin, a group of 14 Snipes, Spoonbill, Great egret, Little egret and many more. Also a Kingfisher was flying by. Barbara takes the time to photograph some birds and was very pleased with the results.

After spending the necessary time at this place we drove to the visitor center and parked the car here. After walking over the dike the birds were very far away and only slightly visible with the telescope. We ate a sandwich here that Barbara and Randy got from the hotel. After this we continued our trip to Den Oever. In the harbor it was very quiet, apart from a few Great crested grebe. Then walked to the new lookout tower which offered a beautiful view of the Wadden Sea and the necessary birds. When we returned to the car it went to Amsterdam with a few stops along the way. When we arrived at Durgerdam we decided to eat an ice cream. After eating our ice cream we made a round of Waterland. In addition to birding also a little sightseeing in the various villages. The necessary water birds were present on Lake Kinsel just north of Durgerdam. Along the dike to Marken there were many Greylag geese and various ducks on the water.

At a leisurely pace we drove back to the center of Amsterdam to drop the guests off at their hotel.
