Full day guided birding Noord Holland province Wednesday 06 September 2017
Guide: Arjan Dwarshuis

At 7 AM sharp I picked up Marvin and his wife Beth near their hotel in Amsterdam. We drove straight to the Kennemerduinen, one of the finest National Parks in the Netherlands. We parked at the visitor’s center around 7:30 AM and from there we hiked to the Vogelmeer. Despite the stormy and rainy weather we managed to see a good selection of specialties in this highly diverse landscape. We had fantastic views of a flock of Firecrests and even better several Crested Tits. We found several Goldcrests, Long-tailed Tits and Marsh Tits and a flyby Wood Lark was a welcome addition.

Despite the weather, we did quite well on raptors with a juvenile Northern Goshawk, a Eurasian Sparrowhawk and a fantastic Eurasian Hobby that caught a House Martin in flight. At the Vogelmeer we had an unexpected flock of three Red Knots and great views of two Greenshanks. There were three species of grebe present, namely Black-necked, Little and Great Crested. The globally vulnerable Common Pochard was luckily plentiful at the lake. We played hide-and-seek with several Dunnocks and Blackcaps, but managed good views of a Lesser Whitethroat.

After our wonderful 4 mile hike we had some well-deserved cappuccinos and vegetarian croquettes at the visitor’s center.

Next up was the Ijmuiden pier. Wind was howling which meant that birding was challenging, but nevertheless rewarding. We studied gulls of five different species and had a nice mixed flock of Ruddy Turnstones, Sanderlings, Dunlins and Ringed Plovers. We found several near-threatened Eurasian Oystercatchers.

Our next location was Polder IJdoorn, 40 minutes’ drive from IJmuiden. Birding was terrific with some very showy Ruffs, a lone globally Vulnerable Black-tailed Godwit, several Spotted Redshanks and Common Snipe. Ducks were plentiful with Eurasian Wigeons, Shovelers and Eurasian Teals, but best of the bunch was a lone immature Garganey. Our most awesome find were two showy Spotted Crakes.

We finished our day at the Kinseldam where we found no less than five Caspian Terns and a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull.
