Full day guided birding at Flevoland
Guide: Arjan Dwarshuis
Date: 11 June 2019

At 6:30 AM I picked up Julia Walsh from her hotel in Wevershoof, a small village in the tip of Noord-Holland. Unfortunately dark clouds assembled and as we crossed the Houtribdijk in to Flevoland, rain was pouring down. Our first stop was at a Black Tern-colony. The weather still made things difficult, but despite that obvious handicap we obtained wonderful views of multiple adults with chicks that were now and then being fed by their dad/mum.

After a quick cup-of-tea at a nearby gas station - while being watched by several inquisitive Rooks - we drove to the shores of the Veluwemeer. Here we quickly found a Great Reed Warbler singing away completely in the open. A special sight indeed, since this spectacular acrocephalus can be considered critically endangered in the Netherlands.

When we entered the Oostvaardersplassen it was still raining, but judging by the increasing bird activity we knew that better times laid ahead.

After a quick lunch at the visitors centre we enjoyed a fantastic relaxing hike through the northeastern part of the Oostvaardersplassen, where we had excellent scopeviews of Redstart, multiple male Bluethroats, Marsh- Reed- and Garden Warbler, a couple of Ravens and last but not least, two 2nd year White-tailed Eagles in a territorial dispute over the open plains.

A week ago I self-found a River Warbler - a vagrant in the Netherlands - and to our amazement the birds was still there, singing away and providing frame-filling scopeviews. When I found this bird a week ago it was 4AM and still dark, so for me, this sighting was the absolute highlight of the day.

A quick stop at a nearby field provided a Red Kite and about a dozen Marsh Harriers hunting for mice.

We finished our day of birding around Flevoland with Europe’s only monotypic bird family, the stunning Bearded Reedling. Even though it was midday and the sun was burning down upon us we managed to find a pair that gave frame-filling views. And excellent finish after a bit of a rusty start earlier that day ;-)
