Full day birding at the Oostvaardersplassen
Guide: Cor Visser
Date 29th of July 2019
Monday morning, July 29, I was early in the center of Amsterdam to pick up Chris and his wife an English couple who have been living in Amsterdam for some time. For them it was the first time for a bird excursion.
We drove out of Amsterdam at 05:45 am in the direction of the Oostvaardersplassen. Fortunately it was very quiet on the road thanks to the holiday period. The first stop on the Oostvaardersdijk yielded outside Herring Gull, Black-headed Gull, Tufted Ducks, Lesser Black-backed Gull and a few Great Crested Grebe.
On our next stop we saw a number of young Bearded Reedling, a few Great Egret and some different species of ducks. Then on to the Lepelaarplassen, on our way to the hide we saw among others Dunnock, Robin, Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler etc.
When we arrived in the hide it was very quiet with visitors. A young White-tailed Eagle had already been seen on one of the islands. After some searching we got a good view in the telescope of that massive youngbird. There were also the necessary duck species on the water as well Great Egret and Little Grebe.
Back at the parking it was time for coffee and of course a stroopwafel. In the meantime the temperature started to rise and we decided to continue by car with the air conditioning on.
Arriving at the next hide we saw a Buzzard flying away. In front of the hide we saw various waders, Avocet, Ruff, Spotted Redshank and a large group of young Bearded Readling and also a Bluethroat that was in the moult. After a walk through the area we went for a lunch in the shop.
After about half an hour we drove on to the next hide. The Kingfisher showed itself beautifully here. At one point the Greylag Geese and ducks flew into the air, resulting in a beautiful spectacle. We could not see why they suddenly went up in the air, but I suspect a raptor flew over. After a while when the peace had returned we walk back to the car and quietly drove back over the Oostvaardersdijk to Amsterdam.
We drove a little north of Amsterdam to show some places that Chris can easily visit by bike. This beautiful day also came to an end and I dropped off Chris and his wife in the center of Amsterdam. We didn’t see so many species during the day but it was partly due the high temperature.
