Winter Photo Tour
The Netherlands are best known for it's numbers of wintering Geese, Ducks and Swans. Thousands of birds come here to spend the winter. Imagine to stand at a lake at sunrise when all the sudden tens of thousands geese fly up from their roost heading to the meadows to forage, it let one stand in awe when all these birds fly overhead. The majority of are Barncale, Greylag and Greater White-fronted Goose and closer to the coast we find Brent Geese. With these species one can find other Red-breasted Goose, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Pink-footed Goose and sometimes Snow and Ross' Goose if you know where too look.
Most of the ducks forage at night on the meadows and rest on the water during the day, sometimes it seems one can walk over the Wigeons that are packed together. Other common fresh water species are Teal, Shoveler, Gadwall, Tufted Duck and Common Pochard. Most people come to see Smew, Goldeneye, Goosander, Red-breasted Merganser and Red-crested Pochard.
But these are not the only interesting wintering birds think of Short-eared Owl, Hen Harrier, Purple Sandpiper and Bearded Tit just to name a few.
