Texel

Target species:

  • Dotterel
  • Little Tern
  • Turtle Dove
  • Eurasian Spoonbill
  • many species of waders
  • scarce and rare birds

The island of Texel is probably the most well known birding destination in the Netherlands. This island is actually the compact version of the Netherlands with all the habitats. The Wadden Sea, North Sea, dunes, meadows, heather and woodlands you can almost see all the species that breed in the Netherlands.

Beside the breeding bird many migrating birds visit the island during their migration. The Wadden Sea is an important stop-over for migrating waders which gather in their millions. Texel is also the best rarity hotspot as many vagrants have been recorded here.

Beside birding the island is also very good for photographing birds. Many sites can be reached by car which you can use as an hide and at other sites birds come close by and are used to the photographers. As the first ferry sails at 06:30 from the mainland you're not always able to be there with the first light. Therefore we recommend to book a night on the island.
