For an evening bird walk Barbara and I visited a bit more sheltered nature reserve. The original plan was to visit the coast and dunes but due to the strong cold wind we adjusted the plan. A marshland with open water was the alternative.
On the way we started to add the urban birds to our list while leaving The Hague. First thing at the site was a Cuckoo we heard calling with some Sand Martins flying overhead. A quick scan on the first lake provided Tufted Ducks and Common Pochards.
The next area was the reserve that's created for aquatic birds. We could add several species of ducks and waders including Pied Avocets, Little Ringed Plover and Black-tailed Godwit. Due to the wind it was hard to see the song birds that were singing in the vegetation like Sedge, Reed, Willow, Garden Warbler etc.
In the last light of the day we checked the grasslands with some water on it. Although the higher grass made it difficult we could observe Snipes, Ruff, Wood Sandpiper and more Godwits. Here a female Marsh Harrier was patrolling the fields where we ended the day with.
