20210619 Amsterdam Birding Tour

Gepubliceerd op 19 juni 2021 om 08:13

Even if you have a couple of hours to spare you can see some interesting birds just outside Amsterdam on an evening walk, read Rein's report here:

At six o’clock in the evening I meet Billie and Pete at the carpark just outside Amsterdam.

Due to circumstances we made a tour in the evening. It’s the end of June and most birds are quiet. They are taking care of their kids or are in molt. But still there is something to see out there. A couple of Kestrels is taking care of their family. The male is constantly hunting for mice along the carpark.

A Black-tailed Godwit is alarming when a Lesser Black-backed Gull is flying over, protecting his young. We walk slowly towards the marsh area and on the way we see a Great Egret, Reed Bunting and hear Reed and Sedge Warbler.

At the marsh area is a couple of Spoonbills foraging and above the reed a male  Marsh Harrier is searching for prey. With a lot of noise a couple of Common Redshanks arrive at the site and an Avocet is flying over.

We take a walk along the dike and in the trees on the other side of the water are a couple Great Spotted Woodpeckers playing around. A young Great Crested Grebe is calling for his parents and an Oystercatcher is flying over our heads.

Back at the carpark we have a look at the family of Kestrels and on a fence a Buzzard is looking for prey. We are also lucky to see a Common Whitethroat.

At half past nine we have seen pretty much all the birds in the walking distance of the carpark and we say goodbye.
